Chapter Eleven

The drive to Lance’s house took us about half an hour and that was with both men driving with urgency, neither one of them wanted to be caught out in the open after dark. After what had happened at the dealership, none of us believed my whereabouts were unknown. I’d hoped that my jitters would have calmed by now, but no such luck. I rummaged through my purse at the first opportunity and popped a pill the moment Torch stepped away from me. He had disappeared into the woods the moment we arrived to make some phone calls; privacy was something Torch wasn’t willing to gamble with when dealing in his own affairs.

Lance’s house was just what you would expect from a rugged, country boy. It was a simple ranch design, but with, as he described it, an ample four thousand square feet of space that was large enough for a growing family. From the pride in his gaze as he showed me around the front of the property, I would surmise that he had built the place with his own two hands. As we neared the large front porch the scent of cedar filled my senses.

“Your home is lovely, Lance. I adore the way cedar smells.” He beamed, thrilled with my approval of his residence and came closer to me, gently placing his hand on my lower back to guide me up the steps to the front porch. It was a nice sized porch that held a row of rocking chairs with ceiling fans installed on the beams of the ceiling.

“I am glad you approve–Oh, God.” Lance abruptly turned up his nose and backed away from me. Talk about giving a girl a complex. I sniffed at my clothes. “Julie, you reek of Torch.”

“What?” I sniffed at my shirt once more, yet didn’t really pick up a strong fragrance. “I don’t smell anything.”

“He’s marked you.” Lance looked downright disgusted as he spoke, “Is that something you agreed to? Are you and he…”

From the way Lance was looking at me, you would think I was a skanky prostitute he had just mistakenly invited to his house. “Are we what? Look, I don’t know what you think you know about me from the supernatural grapevine, but I guarantee you that you have no idea who I really am or what this whole experience has been like for me. As to Torch marking me, I have no clue what you are talking about or what that even means.”

His expression softened. “I won’t pretend to understand what you’ve been through and I’m not suggesting anything, nor am I belittling your character, but you carry the scent of a man who is claiming you as his and being as you don’t seem to be all that attached to the warrior fella, I find it puzzling is all. Now, why don’t we go inside to have a cup of coffee and try to relax.” He opened the storm door and held it open for me to enter.
